The training is presented by:Pacific Marine Resources Institute, Florida Public Archaeology Network, and Flinders University in conjunction with the CNMI Historic Preservation Office and Coastal Resources Management Office with grant funding from NOAA’s 2010 Marine Education and Training Mini-Grant Program.

The 2011 Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar will focus on providing COURSE DIRECTORS, INSTRUCTOR TRAINERS, DIVE SHOP OWNERS, INSTRUCTORS, DIVE MASTERS, and DIVE BOAT TOUR OPERATORS with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, aircraft wrecks, vehicle wrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites. Upon completion of the Seminar, you will be able to teach

the new Heritage Awareness Specialty Course (approved by NAUI, PADI, and SSI) and will know how to promote sustainable underwater heritage tourism in your area.

The FREE two-day seminar will include one day of classroom-based learning and one day of in-field training. Please contact Jennifer McKinnon before April 5, 2011 to reserve your space in the Seminar.

The classroom session will include a series of lectures on:

  • Underwater archaeology, shipwrecks and ship construction
  • Seafaring culture: what we can learn from shipwrecks
  • Issues in conservation: take only photos and leave only bubbles
  • Laws pertaining to submerged cultural resources – both federal and state
  • Artificial reefs: the importance of maintaining shipwrecks for sea life
  • Teaching outline and classroom modules for your training   organization (provided in Japanese and English languages)
  • An introduction to the new WWII Underwater Heritage Trail
  • And more…


shapeimage_3The in-field training will include:

A SCUBA dive on the Kawanishi H8K “Emily” plane wreck and a dive on the PBM Mariner plane wreck
The diving provides participants with direct experience relating to the previous day’s lectures
THE COURSE IS FREE OF CHARGE and includes free boat charter on the second day and two free tank rentals; however participants have to supply their own SCUBA gear and proof of dive certification. Spaces are limited so please reserve early. If you are not a course director, instructor trainer, dive shop owner, instructor, dive master or dive boat tour operator you will be placed on a waiting list.
